Some time ago, Colonel Wilma Deering attempted to apprehend Roxanne Trent and Commander Corliss, two notorious gun-runners. However, in the course of her pursuit a fire broke out in the criminals’ spacecraft, and although Trent and Corliss were able to escape from justice, the flames left them both badly disfigured.

Now the two criminals want revenge on Wilma. Having secured a quantity of Twentieth-Century nerve gas, they plan to use to poison Earth’s atmosphere, thereby destroying all life on the planet. Now that Wilma is commander of the Earth Defense Squadron, it is up to her to stop Trent and Corliss’ mad plan. However, the gas is stored in the gun-runners’ base, which is located inside a seemingly-impenetrable asteroid belt; the only pilots able to traverse the field are the members of the Earth Defense Directorate's 69th Squadron - but all of these aged flyers have since retired from active duty. Unless Wilma and Buck can convince them to come back to service, Earth will be doomed…
